  HAVS Tier 4 Assessments

HAVS Tier 4 Assessments in London and the Home Counties

Employers have a legal duty under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 to protect workers from hand-arm vibration syndrome. Where health surveillance identifies abnormal findings, a Tier 4 specialist medical assessment by an occupational health physician is required.

Artensia Medical Services provides HAVS Tier 4 assessments for employers, HR teams and occupational health providers across London, Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Berkshire and the Home Counties. Assessments are carried out by Dr Christopher Levy, a GMC-registered occupational health physician, and provide a definitive clinical opinion on diagnosis, severity and fitness for work.

Appointments are available at short notice. Reports are issued promptly to support your legal compliance and workforce management.

What is a HAVS Tier 4 assessment?

A Tier 4 HAVS assessment is a specialist medical assessment undertaken when an employee has abnormal findings on health surveillance or symptoms suggestive of hand-arm vibration syndrome.

The purpose of the assessment is to:

• confirm or exclude a diagnosis of HAVS

• assess severity using the Stockholm classification

• provide clear advice on fitness for work

• guide future management and exposure to vibration

When is a Tier 4 referral required?

A referral for a Tier 4 HAVS assessment is typically made when:

• Tier 3 health surveillance identifies abnormal findings

• an employee reports symptoms such as tingling, numbness or blanching

• there is concern regarding progression of symptoms

• a definitive diagnosis is required for management or legal purposes

Early referral allows for timely diagnosis and appropriate management.

What does the assessment involve?

The assessment is carried out by an occupational health physician and includes:

• a detailed occupational and exposure history

• review of symptoms and progression

• clinical examination of the upper limbs

• assessment of vascular and neurological features

Where appropriate, previous health surveillance results are reviewed.

What will the report include?

Following the assessment, a structured report is provided to the employer.

This will include:

• diagnosis (or exclusion) of HAVS

• grading using the Stockholm classification

• advice on fitness for work

• recommendations regarding vibration exposure

• guidance on workplace adjustments or restrictions

Reports are written in a clear and practical format to support management decisions.
